Aegyptiaca: Literature Database of the Institute for Egyptology and Coptology in Münster

Aegyptiaca, the literature database of the Institute for Egyptology and Coptology of the WWU Münster comprises all acquisitions made by the institute since 1987. This includes information on journals and series by the use of keywords. Retrospective work (aiming at the year 1822) continually supplements the database.

Bavarian State Library (BSB): Codices iconographici (CodIcon online)

Funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation), the “Codices iconographici” of the Bavarian State Library were digitized and are gradually released to the public. Currently available are the digital edition of the Schmeller Repertorium and a searchable transcript of a structured excerpt. New descriptions and full digitization of ca. 130 objects from the 17th century have been completed.

Bavarian State Library (BSB): Research documentation of manuscripts

Since around 1950 the Bavarian State Library has been documenting research publications on the collections of the Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books. This documentation is based on systematic evaluation of the library’s acquisitions (special prints, specimen copies, monographs and journals) and recently also on retrospective analysis of full text journals and databases.

Funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation), in 2003 the 113.000 records of the old card catalogue (“Literaturkatalog”) were digitized and integrated into the database.

The database is constantly enhanced by ongoing evaluation work.

Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW): Greek and Roman Antiquities Departmental Library

The Greek and Roman Antiquities Departmental Library collects books and journals of all academic projects on Ancient Studies conducted by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

Methodical collecting started during the 19th century but older collections date back to the 16th century.

Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE): Open access academic resources

BASE (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine), operated by the Bielefeld University Library, is one of the largest search engines dedicated to academic (open access) resources worldwide. Metadata from freely accessible repositories is regularly indexed. The portal PropylaeumSEARCH includes a relevant selection of resources related to Ancient Studies. This selection is based on content carrying Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). Since DDC classification in BASE is partly an automatic process, errors may occur from time to time and search results from other subject areas may wrongly appear in the selection. Not all publications included in BASE are freely accessible (open access), but direct access is frequently possible through license agreements (usually on the basis of your IP).

The Database Information System (DBIS) is a cooperative service listing scientific databases. It comprises freely accessible databases as well as those needing to be licensed by a specific library. Currently the DBIS is listing over 13.000 databases. These include media on CD-ROM and DVD, but for the most part the information is available online.

Dresden, Archaeological Heritage Office

The library of the Archaeological Heritage Office of Saxony is the third largest special subject library on Pre- and Early History in East Germany. By exchanging publications with more than 350 partners all over the world the library is able to offer a great variety of the latest archaeological literature. The collection’s main focus is on publications concerning Saxony from prehistoric times to present age and on special subject literature on Europe from Stone Age to Early Modern Age.

Electronic Journals Library (EZB)

The Electronic Journals Library is a service to facilitate the use of scholarly journals on the internet. It offers a fast, structured and unified interface to access full-text articles online. The participating libraries provide their users access to the journals they subscribe to. The journals are presented in lists sorted by research area. An updated list is generated by the database according to the member library's specifications each time it is accessed. The availability of full-text access is indicated by traffic-light symbols according to the license situation of each member library.

German Archaeological Institute (DAI): iDAI.bibliography/ZENON

The database iDAI.bibliography/ZENON includes the library collections of all DAI departments, the DEI Amman and the Winckelmann Society as well as retrodigitized source materials and e-resources. Books, journals, essays and reviews are catalogued descriptively, subject oriented, and topographically. Listings of new acquisitions are available. Connecting the bibliographical data to other portals of the DAI (e.g. iDAI.gazetteer) is in progress.

This section of the ZENON online catalogue covers all publications on Archaeology (i.e. essays, monographs and journals) of the three Berlin DAI libraries: Eurasia Department, Department of Oriental Studies and the Berlin Head Office. Records of e-publications and retrodigitized publications are available.

Gnomon Bibliographic Database (GBD)

The Gnomon Bibliographic Database (GBD) is one of the most extensive database systems in Classical Studies (Ancient History, Epigraphy, Numismatics, Papyrology, Classical Philology, Classical Archaeology and Archaeology of the Roman Provinces, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Pre- and Early History, Hebrew Bible and New Testament, Early Church History and Patristics, Jewish Studies) including publications on the history of scholarship. The GBD was founded in 1991 by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Malitz (Eichstätt) and includes monographs, anthologies, articles in journals, reviews and encyclopaedias in all relevant academic languages searchable in detail with a comprehensive multilingual thesaurus (currently ca. 25.000 keywords).

The Archaeological Library of the Kunstbibliothek contains all archaeological collections of the Berlin National Museums. Publications are catalogued according to the Regensburger Verbundklassifikation (Regensburg Library Classification Scheme). The library of the LEIZA is one of the largest archaeological libraries in Germany. The collection’s main focus is on publications concerning the cultural history and archaeology of the Ancient World from Palaeolithic Age to the Central Middle Ages. The library of the Leopold Wenger Institute is the largest library on ancient law in Germany. The online catalogue offers bibliographical records of essays on ancient legal history starting from 1991.

Regesta Imperii OPAC: Special Subject Catalogue on Byzantine Studies

The RI OPAC is a freely accessible literature database for medieval research in the entire European language area, covering all disciplines. The database serves as a digital catalogue of cited literature for the regestae database run by the project Regesta Imperii (Academy of Sciences and Literature, Mainz). It is also a universal research tool for searching for publications from the 16th century to the present day.
A special section on Byzantine Studies is integrated into PropylaeumSEARCH.

As the largest scientific universal library in Germany, the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Berlin State Library – Prussian Cultural Heritage) is a central supplier of national and international literature.
